TDN MAGAZINE, As the Science Gets Better, Catching the Cheats Becomes Easier: Part V of A Painful Truth: No matter the sport, cheaters have always stayed one step ahead of those trying to catch them by doping with as-yet undetectable products. But what if authorities didn't need to determine what the products were, only what the specimin should look like if unaltered by any drug? Meet the biological passport, and Travis Tygart, the man who has successfully routed out two of sports' most defiant cheats, Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones, neither of whom had ever tested positive. While Royal Delta was putting on a show in the GI Beldame S. in New York, the filly that beat her in the GI Personal Ensign H. at Saratoga Aug. 26, Love and Pride, took her own show on the road and came away with a second top-level score. The progressive Love and Pride missed by a head in the GIII Allaire DuPont Distaff S. at Pimlico May 19, then collected a first graded win in the GIII Obeah S. at Delaware June 16. She was a big 29-1 longshot in the GII Delaware H. July 21, and after setting torrid splits, tired to a well-beaten fourth behind Royal Delta. The Personal Ensign was hardly billed as a rematch, but Love and Pride avenged that effort nonetheless, attending honest splits and ultimately holding the champ at bay by a half-length. Given her final drill for this at Saratoga Sept. 22 and shipped west, the 4-year-old, off at relatively generous 4-1 odds in the race previously known as the Lady's Secret, was soon in front and laid down pressured splits of :23.98 and :48.47. She inched to a daylight lead on the turn, and at the quarter pole it was clear she wasn't for catching as Martin Garcia just pointed her in the right direction. Fellow shipper Joyful Victory took second over favored Include Me Out. "This filly, when she gets a chance to settle into a rhythm, she's obviously able to finish off her races," said Mike McCarthy, assistant to winning trainer Todd Pletcher. "I think you saw that today. Provided everything goes well, I believe this filly and the horse we run tomorrow [Turbo Compressor in the John Henry] will stick around [for the Breeders' Cup]." Love and Pride was produced by Bernardini's Grade I-placed sister Ile de France. The mare has 3-year-old ridgling named French Storm, a $250,000 FTFFEB juvenile who ran fourth in a maiden special for trainer Mike Harrington in July in his latest. Ile de France did not produce a foal in 2010, and had a Street Cry (Ire) filly in 2011. The last crop of A.P. Indy recently went through the ring at Keeneland September. Lane's End living legend is the top-ranked sire by yearling average on the TDN Insta-Tistics, with his nine yearlings sold averaging $466,111.
