TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

15th at NMTG1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S.  [1m (T)]Winner: Siyouma (Ire), f, 4 by Medicean (GB)

THE GALLIC LEAGUE

Following the lead of her now-retired compatriot Sahpresa (Sahm), Robert Jeffcock's Siyouma (Ire) (Medicean {GB}) made it a fourth straight French success in Newmarket's G1 Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot S. while causing a 12-1 upset in the process. Only fifth behind the brilliant Snow Fairy (Ire) (Intikhab) in Deauville's G1 Prix Jean Romanet last time Aug. 19, the bay took a lead from the runaway pacesetter Laugh out Loud (GB) (Clodovil {Ire}) against the far rail and, after passing that rival with a furlong remaining, was always holding the errant runner-up Elusive Kate (Elusive Quality) to score by 3/4 of a length. "She was very well today and we were pretty confident, although we expected softer ground," jockey Gerald Mosse commented. "I was lucky, as the pace was good in front of me, and she picked up from the four and went to the line. She is definitely better at a mile."

Like the eventual triple winner of this race Sahpresa, Siyouma started out under the radar in the formative part of her career in her native country and was making her black-type debut when fourth in the 10-furlong Listed Le Vase d'Argent at Toulouse Apr. 27. Producing a strong finish to be third in the G2 Prix Corrida over 1 5/16 miles at Saint-Cloud May 28, she delivered the same late flourish to fill the same spot behind Giofra (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Elusive Kate in the G1 Falmouth S. on the July Course here July 13. Again nearest at the finish against the best of her sex in the Jean Romanet, she was ridden closer to the pace by Gerald Mosse and that proved decisive as the Rowley Mile bias continued to favor prominent runners. As the Cheveley Park S. one-two had done minutes earlier, Laugh Out Loud and Siyouma raced against the far rail with Elusive Kate chasing after stumbling badly at the start. While the leader paid for her over-exuberance and the eventual runner-up veered markedly left as she had done when winning last year's G1 Prix Marcel Boussac, Siyouma was in the perfect spot to benefit and had the race in safe keeping by the time William Buick straightened Elusive Kate, who lost a plate at the start. "I was worried about the ground, because she is better on a softer surface," trainer Francois Doumen told PA Sport. "Every time she's done a bit of work on the soft, she's flown. She has been improving through the year, and only came to herself when she came over to run in the Falmouth. She was quite immature and hardly ran at three. She is easy to train, has an easy temperament, and Gerald said he won more easily that it may have looked." J "TDN Rising Star" J Beauty Parlour (GB) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who was sent off the 13-8 favorite on her first start for Sir Henry Cecil, failed to pick up after traveling smoothly and was seventh. Siyouma is the second foal to race--and more importantly the second Group 1 winner--for her 10-year-old stakes-winning dam Sichilla, whose first foal is the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere-Gran Criterium hero Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}). Sichilla is a granddaughter of GI Yellow Ribbon Country Queen (Explodent) and is a half-sister to the four-time Group 1 winner and sire Slickly (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}).
