Pierro, the reigning champion 2-year-old and Triple Crown winner, remained perfect in eight career tries with a flawless performance in his first try at this venue, which hosts the G1 Cox Plate in four weeks' time. Victorious in the G1 Golden Slipper, G1 Sires' Produce S. and G1 Champagne S. in the span of three weeks last April, the bay colt got the winter off and picked up right where he left off, taking the G3 Run to the Rose S. Sept. 1. Prohibitively favored here, Pierro won the break, but was content to ease back into second for the opening five furlongs. He edged closer to the front while between rivals to the final bend, opened up under little encouragement and proved much the best. "It was just a galloping lesson," commented winning trainer Gai Waterhouse. "We're very privileged to see a colt as good as this." Pierro is now quoted as the $3.80 (5-2) favorite for the Oct. 27 and is odds-on for his next engagement in the G1 Caulfield Guineas Oct. 13.
