TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Gold Edge overcame a terrible start and her 19-1 odds to prevail at first asking for a $50,000 tag under the Twin Spires June 24. The Dolphus Morrison homebred handled the synthetic shift to take the Lisa M. S. over this surface Aug. 4 Aug. 4, and maintained her unbeaten record with a determined effort here. Content to bide her time in the early stages, Gold Edge set her sights on longshot pacesetter La Song in the stretch. That grey dug in gamely, but Gold Edge persevered and edged by her just before the wire. "I wasn't sure we were going to get there until the last couple of jumps," said winning rider Chris Emigh. "She's been training so good. I knew she might get beat, but they were really going to have to run to beat her. She's been training awesome and she tries her heart out." You Bought Her (Graeme Hall) clipped heels with American Sugar (Harlan's Holiday) on the turn and went down. American Sugar, who crossed the wire seventh, was subsequently disqualified to last.
