Smart Strike Filly Surges Late at Del Mar

SCARLET STRIKE (f, 2, Smart Strike--Scarlet Tango {SP}, by French Deputy), third on debut when sprinting five furlongs at Hollywood June 9, was coming off a runner-up effort over six furlongs of the Del Mar oval July 29. Stretching out to a mile for this third go, the bay filly tarried near the back of the pack as longshot Secret Memo (Horse Greeley) blitzed along on a runaway lead. The pacesetter wilted on the final turn as Scarlet Strike was making rapid progress along the rail. Angled out for the stretch run, the 5-2 shot gamely split foes in deep stretch and powered to a half-length victory. Majestic Minister (Majestic Warrior) was second. The winner, who RNA'd for $70,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, sold for $220,000 as an OBSMAR juvenile after breezing a quarter in :22 flat.
