After breaking his maiden on debut at Calder June 30, Brave Dave chased the pace in the GII Sanford S. at Saratoga July 22. He lost all chance at victory that day when blowing the turn, but regained momentum in the final furlong to re-rally for fourth. Sent off the favorite here, the homebred stumbled from the gate but nonetheless sprang to the lead and set a hot early pace. Confronted by Special Jo at the quarter pole, the winner held that rival off for the length of the stretch to earn his first graded win. "He took a really bad stumble out of the gate, but I know this horse and how fast he is," said winning jockey Paco Lopez. "He rebounded pretty quickly and was in front quickly. I was just sitting and waiting, sitting and waiting, until the quarter pole when I asked my horse. I saw the other horse [Special Jo] coming with his run and my horse responded nicely." It was the fourth win of the day for Lopez.
