Akeed Mofeed confirmed himself as one of Ireland's leading juveniles when registering a second in the Sept. 25 G2 Beresford S. at The Curragh, but a catalogue of minor setbacks meant that he was not seen on the track again until finishing a tired fourth to Camelot (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) in the G1 Irish Derby back at the Kildare venue June 30. Sitting second as Among Equals (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) took a clear early lead, the crowd's choice was nudged into the lead at the top of the lane and powered clear to score with something in hand. "The ground was very testing, but I would never pull him out because of the ground," trainer John Oxx told irishracing.com. "I'm not sure what happened to him in the Derby. I think it was a mixture of him not staying and blowing up a bit. I don't think he's a stayer, and I think a mile to a mile and a quarter is his trip. They went a good gallop and he quickened up well on the ground. We'll feel our way with him now. He might go for the [G3] Kilternan S. [at Leopardstown Sept. 8]. He's entered in the [G1 Irish] Champion S. [on the same day], but we'll take our time with him before stepping back to Group 1 company." Video, courtesy attheraces.com.
