TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

This proved the ideal re-introduction for last year's Arc heroine Danedream, who defied a penalty to set herself up for her upcoming major tests. The last time she had been here was when destroying Germany's best in the G1 Grosser Preis von Baden and, although there was no repeat of those theatrics, the bay demonstrated that she retains ability with a game win. Settled in a share of third early off the honest fractions, she traveled strongly at the end of the back straight, but Andrasch Starke waited until swinging off the home turn to make his move. In front passing the quarter pole, she was alone in the center of the track and may have been idling as Ovambo Queen cut into her advantage in company with Silvaner late on. Trainer Peter Schiergen said, "She is only at about 85% fit as yet, and this race had to be won first. Her next options are the June 24 G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud or the G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S. [at Ascot July 21]. Her main targets this year are the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe [at Longchamp Oct. 7] and the G1 Japan Cup [at Tokyo Nov. 25]."
