FIELD SET FOR MELBOURNE CUP 153
Barriers were drawn yesterday for Tuesday’s G1 A$6-million Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse in Victoria, Australia, with a full field of 24 set to go postward. Among those who fared well in the draw were current favorite Fiorente (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), who drew in post five and looks to improve off a second-place finish in Australia’s showpiece race last year. Drawing just inside Fiorente was British invader Brown Panther (GB) (Shirocco {Ger}), who won this summer’s G2 Goodwood Cup. Dandino (GB) (Dansili {GB}), bet down to second choice following a dominating victory in the American St. Leger Aug. 17 and a smart second in the G1 Caulfield Cup in his Australian debut Oct. 19, has wound up in barrier four. The last two Melbourne Cup winners, Dunaden (Fr) (Nicobar {GB}) and Green Moon (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), are back to try to make it a rare double, and they will exit from posts one and 10, respectively. The latter is part of a six-strong team for owner Lloyd Williams and trainer Robert Hickmott, which also includes G2 Herbert Power S. winner Sea Moon (GB) (Beat Hollow {GB}), G1 Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner (Aus) (Reset {Aus}), G1 Sydney Cup winner Mourayan (Ire) (Alhaarth {Ire}), G1 Metropolitan winner Seville (Ger) (Galileo {Ire}), and G1 St. Leger winner Masked Marvel (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}). Like Dunaden, Red Cadeaux (GB) (Cadeaux Genereux {GB}) is back to run in his third straight cup. He finished second to Dunaden in 2011 by the narrowest of nostrils, and checked in eighth last year. He will have to overcome a wide draw in 23 to emerge victorious this time. Mount Athos (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}) has drawn just inside Red Cadeaux in 22, and looks to get better luck in running than when fifth last year, and to go give trainer Luca Cumani in his first Melbourne Cup win in eight tries.

Monday evening, Flemington, Australia, post time: 11:00 p.m. EDT
