Unusual Heat's Gervinho takes Sir Beaufort

7th at SAXGII Sir Beaufort S. ($200K)  [1m (T)]Winner: Gervinho, c, 3 by Unusual Heat
Gervinho (c, 3, Unusual Heat--Foreverinthegame, by Out of Place) got his nose in front on the wire in a thrilling finish to Thursday’s GII Sir Beaufort S. at Santa Anita. The sophomore then survived a lengthy steward’s inquiry before officially earning his first graded stakes victory. Gervinho, a 7-2 chance, settled well off the pace as the early leaders battled through fractions of :23.00, :45.19 and 1:08.70. In an eventful turn into the stretch, Outside Nashville (Broken Vow) angled out sharply at the top of the lane, interfering with several runners and forcing Gervinho out into the middle of the stretch. Procurement (Milwaukee Brew) darted to a hole on the inside, while Gervinho was regrouping on the outside and those two rivals were narrowly in front at the wire, with the photo showing Gervinho just a nose in front. Outside Nashville and Si Sage (Fr) (Sageburg {Ire}) dead-heated for third, but Outside Nashville was demoted to fourth for the interference. The time for the mile was 1:33.47. Gervinho was coming off a fourth-place finish in the Dec. 1 GI Hollywood Derby. Lifetime Record: 9-4-2-1, $422,140. VIDEO O-Keith Brackpool. B-Barry Abrams & Madeline Auerbach (Ca). T-Carla Gaines.
