TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Successful Dan, winner of the GIII Northern Dancer S. over this track and trip in 2009, added the GII Fayette S. on Keeneland's synthetic as a 4-year-old, and looked to secure a career high when he crossed the wire first in the 2010 GI Clark Ha. However, the Morton Fink homebred was disqualified to third, and he wound up being sidelined for 17 months. He returned to defeat a solid allowance group going seven panels at Keeneland Apr. 6, and attracted plenty of attention in this competitive renewal of the Alysheba. Successful Dan was unhurried early and settled well off the pace contested by Plutonium (Monarchos) with Fort Larned sitting second. He made a sweeping move on the far turn to reach contention as Fort Larned assumed control and had Mucho Macho Man looming boldly at the head of the lane. Mucho Macho Man couldn't quite kick between rivals, and Fort Larned fought on gamely, but couldn't quite withstand the Twin Spires aficionado.
