Sum of the Parts, an impressive debut winner at Churchill Downs last May, was runner-up in Remington's Kip Deville S. Oct. 7 before concluding his juvenile season with a well-beaten sixth-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint beneath the Twin Spires Nov. 4. The dark bay has caught fire since turning three, kicking off the term with a runaway Keeneland allowance win Apr. 20, and entered off a narrow victory in Presque Isle's Tom Ridge S. May 15. Hustled to the front through fractions of :22.37 and :45.64 here, Sum of the Parts was doing it comfortably, and easily turned back the challenge of GII Woody Stephens third Il Villano to win for fun. "He gave me a ton," winning jockey Leandro Goncalves said. "I just waited on this horse. I rode him very confident. I could have waited even longer on this horse, but then Il Villano came to us and I let him go."
