Something Extra, twice stakes-placed last term, was still looking for his first black-type score after a troubled fourth-place finish in the Apr. 7 Jacques Cartier S. over the main track last time out. Away well, the 13-1 outsider quickly assumed control and bounded clear. He was unchallenged through fractions of :23.0 and :45.2 and continued to find more down the lane after completing six furlongs in 1:08.76 to win with authority. "I wanted to use his speed, and the track too," said winning rider Eurico Rosa da Silva. "[The turf course] seems like a big advantage for a speed horse. I kept talking to him, saying, 'Relax, relax.' Then I said, 'Boy, I love you,' and then he relaxed, put his ears up and had a little breather, and then ran very fast home. He ran a great race." Something Extra has now hit the board in all four turf starts. "I would think he loves the turf when it's hard like this," commented winning trainer and co-owner Gail Cox. "This horse always runs 100%. He's easy to train, he's a good work horse and he's pretty nice to get ready. He's always been like that."
