Last year's G2 Derby Italiano hero Crackerjack King was unbeaten in his native land entering this contest and defied a strong overseas challenge to keep up the sequence. Settled in rear early despite the pace proving only moderate, the grey who was last seen warming up with a win in a 10-furlong conditions event at the San Siro Apr. 8, made his move as Afsare was committed in early stretch. After a prolonged tussle with the British raider, he gained the edge approaching the furlong marker and drew clear late to confirm his status as Italy's leading performer. On his only outing overseas last term, Crackerjack King finished down the field in the G1 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, but with a move to the Newmarket stable of Marco Botti confirmed yesterday, the lightly raced 4-year-old will have to hold his own on the international scene. Scuderia Effevi's Felice Villa has sold part of the winner to Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock. "Kieren Fallon was very strong on the second and took the race by the scruff of the neck, so this was a real test for Crackerjack King and he really is a champion," his conditioner Stefano Botti told the
Racing Post. "I'm very emotional because he's going to leave soon--I am broken-hearted."
