TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Keeneland's GI Shadwell Turf Mile, scheduled for Oct. 6, has been increased to $750,000, up from $600,000 in 2011. The event highlights Keeneland's fall race meeting, which runs from Oct. 5 through 27 and features 17 stakes with purse money totaling $4.5 million. The other Grade I tests offered through the meet are the Darley Alcibiades S., Dixiana Breeders' Futurity S., First Lady S., Juddmonte Spinster S. and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup S.

"We are very excited, in partnership with Keeneland, to further enhance the status of the Shadwell Turf Mile, and to secure its position as one of the country's most prestigious grass races," said Rick Nichols, vice president and general manager of Shadwell Farm, which has sponsored the race since 1999. Following the increase in purse, the Shadwell Turf Mile will rank alongside the spring meeting's $750,000 GI Toyota Blue Grass S. as Keeneland's most valuable stakes in terms of prize money.
