TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

yearling CSea the Stars (Ire)--Alpine Rose (Fr)1,200,000
Breeder: Ecurie des Monceaux and Skymarc Farm Inc
    Buyer: Mandore International Agency
    Consignor: Ecurie des Monceaux
A son of Sea the Stars (Ire) sells for 1.2million euros at the Arqana August Yearling Sale. The first foal out of the 2009 G1 Prix Jean Romanet winner Alpine Rose (Fr) (Linamix {Fr}), the February-foaled grey was knocked down to Nicolas de Watrigant's Mandore International Agency. "We really wanted this colt," commented Mandore International's Nicolas de Watrigant after purchasing the star turn for Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani. "He is an exceptional-looking horse who combines the quality of his sire and dam and who will be top-class. He has the pedigree to be a potential sire and passed all the examinations. He also seems to have a lovely temperament and we saw him at the stud a month and a half ago and three or four times after and liked him a little bit more every time. We thought he'd got for around a million, so we had to play it by ear and we finally got him and we're absolutely delighted." Consignor Henri Bozo, who also sold the topper on day one, added, "This colt was offered by a partnership between Charles Henri de Moussac, Lady O'Reilly and Mr Urano, who bought the dam here at the December Sale. We decided on Sea the Stars and he has produced a lovely colt with an exceptional temperament."
