TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

2yo CScat Daddy--Magical Mist$575,000
    Breeder: Cloverleaf Farm II (KY)
Buyer: Donato Lanni, agent for Mercedes Stable
    Consignor: Kings Equine

Hip 39, a colt by the hot young sire Scat Daddy, elicited a bid of $575,000 to lead the early returns at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale. Hill 'n' Dale's Donato Lanni, acting on behalf of Ernie Moody's Mercedes Stables, purchased the handsome chestnut. The colt is a son of the unraced 6-year-old Magical Mist (Congaree), a half-sister to GI Del Mar Futurity winner J.P.'s Gusto (Successful Appeal). It's the extended family of GI Kentucky Oaks heroine Proud Spell (Proud Citizen). It was the first trip through a sales ring for the Scat Daddy colt, who was consigned by Kings Equine. He was purchased in utero by Cloverleaf Farm II for just $14,000 at the FTKFEB sale in 2010. Cloverleaf bred the colt.
