TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Off at odds much higher than his 6-1 morning line quote, lightly raced Nonios parlayed a ground-saving trip into a promising upset score over GI Kentucky Derby sixth-place finisher Liaison in his stakes debut. The dark bay opened his account with a 2 1/4-length debut success going six furlongs at Golden Gate Feb. 11, and more than just handled the stretch-out to a mile Mar. 10--he romped by six lengths with a 93 Beyer Speed Figure. The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee was third against older horses back in San Francisco Apr. 7, and was subsequently flattered by winner Hudson Landing (Maria's Mon), who returned to take the GIII San Franciso S. Apr. 28 before finishing a promoted second in the GIII Berkeley H. last Monday. Nonios had entered off a seven-furlong work in 1:24 2/5 over the Betfair Hollywood Park strip May 28.
Glued to the rail in third early as Gun Boat (Congrats) provided what little pace there was, Nonios came to the head of the lane with plenty of run, but nowhere to go. The tiring Gun Boat provided a bit more room as he dropped back, and Nonios was able to sidestep that rival and get the jump on Liaison, kicking on to the wire with ground-gobbling strides. "TDN Rising Star" Holy Candy, who was well-held while back off the pace early, ran on late to complete the trifecta.
