My Adonis, winner of last year's Jean Lafitte S. at Delta Downs, ran third in the GIII Holy Bull S. at Gulfstream in January before finishing second to Hansen (Tapit) in the GIII Gotham S. in March. He could do no better than seventh in the GI Wood Memorial S. Apr. 7, but came back with a close-up third--at odds-on--in the Canonero II S. at Pimlico May 5. Aiming to give connections a second straight renewal of the GI Belmont S., he tired badly and finished eighth, but got back on track here. The 8-5 second choice was in the mix early and looked like he'd win by a pole when he quickly opened up by four or five lengths turning into the stretch. Favored Macho Macho kept coming in the final furlong, however, and was able to cut the margin to half-length, but My Adonis found the wire in time. The Long Branch is Monmouth's final prep race for the GI Haskell Invitational July 29, and connections said that's the likely target. "The Haskell has always been a thought with this horse," said winning trainer Kelly Breen. "Obviously, well wait to see who's coming and how he's training before we make a decision on that."
