TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Andrew Stone's I'm a Dreamer, who missed by just a head in the 2011 GI E.P. Taylor S. at Woodbine, made amends in her second North American voyage by finding the wire just in time. She also secured a spot in the GI Breeders' Cup F/M Turf at Santa Anita as part of the Beverly D.'s status as a "Win and You're In Race." Her task was made easier when U.S.-based favorite Aruna (Mr. Greeley) stumbled at the start and trailed throughout. Winner of the G3 Dahlia S. at Newmarket in May 2011, I'm a Dreamer was kept in training with David Simcock this term and had been knocking heads with some of the best older runners in Britain. She kicked off 2012 with a third to Izzi Top (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) in the G3 Middleton S. at York May 17, and was beaten only 2 3/4 lengths by The Queen's Carlton House (Street Cry {Ire}) in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. at Sandown May 31. The bay came into this contest off another third to Izzi Top in the G1 Pretty Polly S. over deep ground at The Curragh July 1. Settled in midpack by jockey Hayley Turner, I'm a Dreamer was jostled a bit on the backstretch, but was unperturbed as local heroine Romacaca (Running Stag) led from Up (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Up took the baton turning for home, but the real running was just beginning. I'm a Dreamer took the overland route on the turn, reached contention entering the stretch and, under an energetic Turner ride, hit the front inside the eighth pole. Marketing Mix switched out and rallied furiously, but just missed before galloping out strongly. Turner is the first female rider to win the Beverly D. "I can't believe it," she said. "Thanks to [trainer] David Simcock and his team. I always think that when you have a horse with a lot of ability, it makes your job a lot easier. Well, I thought she had a good chance. She had a good attitude before the race. I think she seems to sparkle well when she's over here [in North America]. It helped to have been here before and know the track. Everybody is so friendly over here." As for Aruna's disappointing race, rider Ramon Dominguez offered, "She just stumbled. I don't know what happened there, and then we were last the whole way."
