TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Having made the perfect start for his freshman sire (by Galileo {Ire}) by annexing Ireland's first juvenile contest of the year at The Curragh March 25, Dawn Approach earned "TDN Rising Star" status when doubling up in highly impressive fashion over this course and distance last time May 16, and continued the winning trend by lifting this black-type bow. The chestnut was one of the first into stride as the gates opened and raced almost upsides the pacesetting Mister Marc from the outset. Nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, he was ridden into an outright lead approaching the final eighth and drew off under mild coaxing in the closing stages for a career high. "He's got a great temperament and will go to [Royal] Ascot for either the [June 19 G2] Coventry [S.] or the [June 23 Listed] Chesham [S.]," trainer Jim Bolger told irishracing.com. "It was a fierce gallop and [jockey] Kevin [Manning] said they went five-furlong pace the whole way, but he stuck at it well. The trip doesn't really matter to him and, like most horses, he would like better ground. It was a little bit loose there today, but he handled soft ground at the Curragh and he's fairly versatile ground-wise. That said, I'd prefer really good ground for him."
