Novellist, who registered wide-margin wins at Dusseldorf Aug. 7 and at Baden-Baden Apr. 8, became Germany's foremost candidate for the July 1 G1 Deutsches Derby when registering a six-length win in the May 6 G3 Albert von Metzler-Rennen at Frankfurt last time. He cemented that berth with another daylight success in this premier trial for that Classic and took his aggregate superiority to 24 lengths with a victory here. The dark bay was keen under restraint until settling off the pace along the backstraight. Set alight at the top of the stretch run, he quickened to the fore approaching the final furlong and surged clear in hand thereafter to take his unbeaten tally to four. "Novellist will now have to bear the burden of favoritism in the [July 1 G1] Deutsches Derby," admitted trainer Andreas Wohler, who also claimed Italy's G1 Gran Premio di Milano earlier in the afternoon. "He coped well with that pressure today and all we have to do now is to keep him in today's shape until Hamburg."
