TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Pakal, successful at Hamburg and Avenches last July, ran second in a Cologne sales race and the G3 Zukunfts-Rennen at Baden-Baden when tested harder the following month. Third in the prestigious Ferdinand Leisten-Memorial back at the Iffezheim track next up Oct. 9, the sleek bay split French Fifteen (Fr) (Turtle Bowl {Ire}) and Bonfire (GB) (Manduro {Ger}) when runner-up closing his juvenile campaign in a stellar renewal of the G1 Criterium International at Saint-Cloud Oct. 29. Building on a sixth in Krefeld's Apr. 22 G3 Dr Busch-Memorial and a fourth in Frankfurt's May 6 G3 Albert Von Metzler-Rennen, he regained the winning thread and caused a major shock here by lowering the colors of long odds-on favorite, and July 1 G1 Deutsches Derby wannabe, Black Arrow, and Salon Soldier, in a pulsating three-way finish. Pakal was sharp from the gate and took a fierce hold in second before bounding along at his own rhythm just off the pace in fourth down the backstraight. Shaken up approaching the quarter mile marker, he closed on the duelling Black Arrow and Salon Soldier, entering the final eighth and stayed on gamely under a power drive to edge that pair nearing the line. Dresden maiden winner Sharivar (Ger) (Sinndar {Ire}) made eyecatching late headway to finish on the heels of the leaders in a promising fourth.
