TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

After a smooth introduction over a mile here in October, Kesampour followed up by five lengths over a quarter mile further the following month before a third trip to this venue yielded a first black-type score in the Listed Prix Francois Mathet over 1 5/16 miles last time Apr. 1. Sent off the hot favorite for this Derby trial, won by the subsequent Epsom hero Pour Moi (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) 12 months ago, the chestnut had to work harder than he has had to so far to keep his perfect record intact. Settled in second early while tracking his pacemaker Shalamzar (Fr) (Selkirk), the homebred edged ahead with 1 1/2 furlongs remaining and fought off the attentions of Albion on his inner to prevail in a blanket finish. Kesampour has achieved enough to carry His Highness The Aga Khan's esteemed colors at either Epsom or Chantilly, but connections were keeping options open in the immediate aftermath. "We are very happy, but the trainer is at Newmarket and hasn't seen the race, so we will wait to discuss it with him before making a decision about where Kesampour goes next," the owner-breeder's Racing Manager Georges Rimaud commented. "He is in the [June 2] G1 Epsom Derby and the [June 3] G1 Prix du Jockey Club, but we will decide in time."
