TDN MAGAZINE, As the Science Gets Better, Catching the Cheats Becomes Easier: Part V of A Painful Truth: No matter the sport, cheaters have always stayed one step ahead of those trying to catch them by doping with as-yet undetectable products. But what if authorities didn't need to determine what the products were, only what the specimin should look like if unaltered by any drug? Meet the biological passport, and Travis Tygart, the man who has successfully routed out two of sports' most defiant cheats, Lance Armstrong and Marion Jones, neither of whom had ever tested positive. Irish Mission began her career with four off-the-board efforts culminating with a fifth-place effort in the Princess Elizabeth S. over this main track last October. She resurfaced with a sixth-place effort over 1 1/16 miles over the Gulfstream turf course Feb. 12 and improved to be a narrowly beaten runner-up over nine furlongs at Hallandale Mar. 29 before breaking her maiden over the Keeneland lawn in a 1 3/16-miles maiden special weight Apr. 26. The strapping filly, standing some 17 hands, was kept wide and in the clear by Alex Solis, just a length or two off pacesetting Black Bird Rock (Flower Alley) through modest splits of :25, :49 3/5 and 1:13 flat. As the field turned for home, any one of five or six horses were in with a chance as they fanned out across Woodbine's Polytrack. Irish Mission got her neck in front inside the final furlong and leveled out beautifully to safely account for favored Northern Passion. Irish Mission's dam, the Sam-Son Farms homebred Misty Mission, is no stranger to Canadian Classic success herself, having won the 2000 Wonder Where S. during her three-race career. The mare produced an Unbridled's Song filly for Sam-Son this spring. Click for brisnet.com catalogue-style pedigree or the brisnet.com chart. Video, sponsored by Taylor Made Sales.
