TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Cogito dealt with the well-regarded subsequent winner Nine Realms (GB) (Green Desert) in a manner which suggested he was a colt with a bright future in a seven-furlong Newmarket maiden on debut Apr. 18. Up against some big reputations and proven Stakes performers here, the bay had to make another leap forward but belied his inexperience to book a possible ticket to Royal Ascot and the June 19 G1 St James's Palace S. Settled close to the moderate early pace in sixth, he had dead aim on Stipulate as that rival gained the edge with over a furlong remaining and reeled him in under coaxing from Frankie Dettori in the final yards. "He is cool and relaxed and very easy to train," conditioner Brian Meehan explained. "He doesn't take a lot of work, so when he had a bad blood picture before his intended start in last Saturday's Listed King Charles II S. we decided to come for this. We always felt he was a stakes horse and he has aspirations in America later on. There is no point hiding him away now and I would hope he would be able to have a crack at the St James's Palace if Paul Reddam and [Racing Manager] Jamie McCalmont agree with that. Frankie said he was very natural and that he was always going to get there and I think on that evidence he'll get a little further."
