Mystical Star, runner-up in Gulfstream's GIII Herecomesthebride S. at second asking last March, was fifth in Belmont's GII Sands Point S. May 30 and closed out her sophomore campaign with a seventh-place finish in the GIII Virginia Oaks July 16. She resurfaced with an allowance win over the Keeneland Polytrack Apr. 21, then ran a remarkable race to rally from far back to cross the line third, beaten only 1 3/4 lengths in the GII Sheepshead Bay S. May 26, but had her number taken down, and was placed eighth for apparently getting a jump on her rivals by beating the gate at the start. Chasing the pacesetting longshot The Underling (Malibu Moon) through an opening quarter in :23.65, she took charge after a half in :48.82. Under pressure at the top of the stretch, Mystical Star dug in gamely down the lane and held off all challengers. "She's obviously a top-class filly, and provided she comes out of the race well, we'll have to think about the [GI] Beverly D. [at Arlington Aug. 18]," trainer Christophe Clement said.
