WINE PRINCESS (f, 3, Ghostzapper--Azeri {Horse of the Year, 3x Ch. Older Mare, MGISW, $4,079,820}, by Jade Hunter) took plenty of tote action in her 5 1/2-furlong debut over the Fair Grounds turf course, bobbled nearing the half-mile and was last for a handful of strides, but found her best stride in the stretch and rallied to be second, beaten just 1 1/2 lengths. The product of Horses of the Year on the top and bottom of her pedigree had every right to improve with a switch to the dirt and a stretch-out in distance, and so it proved. Wine Princess broke alertly and got the perfect spot in fourth, as a fast pace developed just ahead of her. Angled off the fence at the five-sixteenths and sent four wide into the stretch, the 8-5 chalk lugged in a bit passing the eighth pole, but was gathered back up by Shaun Bridgmohan and finished willingly for a five-length victory. The chestnut is the third foal from Azeri, who has already produced the Grade II-placed and recently retired Arienza (Giant's Causeway). Her first produce, Take Control (A.P. Indy), was famously bought back for $7.7 million as a yearling before Kaleem Shah purchased the colt for $1.9 million as a KEEAPR 2-year-old in 2009. Sales history: $475,000 yrl '10 KEESEP. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $39,368.
