TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

On a day when his illustrious sibling Frankel (GB) threatened to steal the show with a customary impressive display of galloping before racing, Noble Mission stepped up to enhance his family's outstanding credentials with an initial black-type success in this Derby trial. Running a promising race on debut despite being beaten five lengths by Swedish Sailor (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) over a mile at Yarmouth in October, the homebred returned sporting a specially deigned hood to win with plenty in hand at Newbury a fortnight earlier. With Godolphin scratching Swedish Sailor (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) here, the opportunity of measuring his rate of progress since his first start was denied, but his talent was still set for examination by a clutch of well-regarded and unexposed rivals. Showing some of Frankel's exuberance early when pocketed in fourth by Tom Queally off the moderate tempo, he was ready to roll, but held in with a quarter mile remaining as Frankie Dettori took his time to launch Mariner's Cross on the front end, while William Buick stood his ground on the newcomer Michelangelo to his right. Extricated in time, the homebred worked his way to the lead with 100 yards remaining and asserted to keep his name in the hat for the Blue Riband. "It was a funny race, as they crawled and then sprinted," trainer Sir Henry Cecil commented. "On that soft ground, he has done well to win. He is not there yet, but he is an improving horse."
