TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Skyring provided his sophomore sire (by Smart Strike) his third stakes winner with a hard-fought wire-to-wire victory. An allowance winner on the dirt on the Derby undercard May 5, the Bluegrass Hall homebred was somewhat improbably making his turf debut in his eighth career start. He was put right on the lead by jockey Joel Rosario and set honest splits while well off the rail. The pressing Hammers Terror (Artie Schiller) came calling in upper stretch, and after gamely turning back that challenge, Skyring kept on fighting to earn the neck victory in a four- or five-horse blanket finish. Easy Crossing completed the English Channel exacta, with Mr. Handsome (Rock Hard Ten) completing the Lane's End trifecta. A jockeys' objection against the winner by the third-place finisher was disallowed. "This horse I liked the best of all mine all day long," said trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who took the GIII Maryland Sprint H. with Hamazing Destiny (Salt Lake) one race earlier. "I felt real good about him. I was anxious to get him on the grass. Corey [Nakatani] rode him at Churchill and loved him. We said, well, English Channel, maybe we should try the grass. It really worked out well. I knew at the top of the stretch when they swarmed him, I said to myself, 'He isn't done yet.' This horse really tries." Click for the brisnet.com chart or Video, sponsored by Taylor Made Sales.
