TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Drill, the GI Del Mar Futurity hero, badly went off form following a runner-up effort in the GI Norfolk S. He was off the board in four straight starts before rebounding with a narrow win over American Act and Creative Cause (Giant's Causeway) in the seven-furlong GII San Vicente S. at Santa Anita Feb. 19. Sent to Oaklawn for the one-mile Northern Spur S. on the GI Arkansas Derby undercard, the bay was 3-5, but settled for second behind Master Rick (Master Command), and he was cutting back to one turn here. American Act jumped out swiftly and Drill was content to settle along the fence, with stablemate Gun Boat pressing from the outside. Martin Garcia sent him between those two turning for home and Drill boldly went through before battling all the way to the wire. "I was just trying to save as much ground as I could," said Garcia. "He was really into the bridle today and we were going so easy." Mike Marlow, Bob Baffert's assistant trainer, added, "Six and a half or seven furlongs may be Drill's best distance. He kind of likes a target, just like he got today."
