TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Very few can master Famous Name below Group 1 level, and Juddmonte's remarkable performer turned in another solid effort here to upstage the four-years younger Born To Sea. Fresh from a 17th Stakes and 11th Pattern-race score in Leopardstown's nine-furlong G3 Meld S. July 26, the ultra-reliable bay moved from second to first before the quarter pole and drew away to easily beat the Irish Derby runner-up, who is still chasing a first Pattern success himself. This performance, giving the three-parts brother to Sea the Stars (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) nine pounds weight-for-age, must count as one of Famous Name's finest despite his advanced age and extended his incredible record of success on home soil. Since finishing second to Curtain Call (Fr) (Sadler's Wells) in the G3 Mooresbridge S. over this track and trip in May 2009, he has won on all 16 occasions that he has contested a domestic race at less than the top level. He also set a personal best here, with a fifth win in 2012 being his highest tally in a single season and, amazingly, was enjoying a first win at Group 2 level. Trainer Dermot Weld was full of admiration for his charge afterwards. "He is an amazing horse, and a wonderful tribute to his owner and his breeding operation," he said. "He is seven and been in training for six years, but his enthusiasm and courage is what it's all about. I'll speak with Lord Grimthorpe and Khalid Abdullah and see where he goes next, but he's in great form at the moment."
