TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Bodemeister Draws Inside, Hansen Survives a Scare
Click here to open this alert in a new page

Zayat Stable LLC and Michael Moreno's Bodemeister (c, 3, Empire Maker), last-out winner of the GI Arkansas Derby, drew gate six and was made the tepid 4-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday's 138th running of the GI Kentucky Derby at historic Churchill Downs, while the connections of reigning juvenile champion Hansen (Tapit) were forced to sweat it out a bit. With two pills left in Dan Bork's shaker--the dreaded inside post and the 14 hole--and the names of Hansen and Daddy Long Legs left to be assigned, it was the Coolmore runner who landed the inside. Wearing sunglasses, perhaps to mask his internal strife, Dr. Kendall Hansen reacted with a fist pump and three taps of his right hand over his heart. Hansen exits a runner-up effort in the GI Toyota Blue Grass S. and is a 10-1 chance on the morning line, just behind that race's winner, Dullahan (Even the Score) at 8-1. Jerry Crawford was all smiles and a huge cheer went up in the crowd when the popular chestnut was assigned the five hole, a perfect draw given the colt's off-the-pace running style.
