ADIEU ADELAIDE, HELLO ASCOT
For the second time in the last 14 days, Black Caviar (Aus) (Bel Esprit {Aus}) treated a packed house of 30,000 racegoers at Adelaide's Morphettville Racetrack to another overwhelming performance, as she prepped for the June 23 G1 Diamond Jubilee S. at Royal Ascot with her 21st career victory in the G1 Goodwood S. The winning margin of 1 1/4 lengths belies the ease with which it was accomplished. Away faster than usual from the eight hole, the 5-year-old tugged Luke Nolen to the early lead and the duo were happy to make the running, as nothing was willing to take them on. With Nolen riding high in the saddle, his elbows glued basically to his knees, Black Caviar went about two lengths clear into the stretch, switched her leads on cue and was never seriously threatened as We're Gonna Rock (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) tried to make a race out of it in the final 100 yards. "Everything has gone as expected, she's done a good job, she's where we want her and so as long as she pleases us in the next three weeks she's on the plane," said winning trainer Peter Moody.

Moody, who often takes the edge off pre-race with a couple of cigarettes, admits to being nervous right up until the time Black Caviar returns to be unsaddled. "I'm just happy and grateful about now that when she turns round and trots back towards me that everything looks good," he commented. "The hairs on the back of my neck stand up like everyone else, but it's just good to get another one behind us." Black Caviar was the subject of some proposition bets during the last week, predicting a wide margin of victory. At the end of the day, neither Moody nor Luke Nolen were at all concerned about the relatively narrow margin. "He [Luke Nolen] was kind on her and we're happy with where we're at," Moody said after the win. "No one has ever given us anymore for winning by a big space, she ran slightly quicker time than she did the other day, she's in good shape, as long as she pulls up well we'll be happy." Added Nolen, "She was never out of second gear. I'm not a punter. I don't worry about margins. As long as she bloody wins I don't care." And now the world awaits Black Caviar at Royal Ascot, where she is already being quoted at odds-on for the Diamond Jubilee S. She is set to depart Melbourne June 7.
