This was supposed to prove easy pickings for last year's G2 Great Voltigeur S. winner and Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up Sea Moon, but he had to pull out the stops to justify skinny odds on his comeback. Having played up before the start at Churchill Downs and often missed the break in his races, the flashy bay looked to have had those quirks ironed out and was sent straight into the lead by Ryan Moore. Despite having his own way up front, the homebred was surprisingly forced into an early tussle with the outsider Cill Rialaig (GB) (Environment Friend {GB}) in early stretch and received a bump from that rival before mastering her. That minor infringement may have softened him up on this seasonal bow and when the race-fit Dandino threatened the upset at the furlong marker he looked as if he might go under. Headed for most of the final eighth, he showed tenacity to regain the advantage 50 yards from the line.
