TDN MAGAZINE, The International Difference: Part III of A Painful Truth: "Welfare in Europe means to train the horse without any chemicals and make him race if he can face the challenge,” says France Galop's Dr. Roland Devolz. “In your country, welfare means to be allowed to use as many drugs as possible to ensure the horse will support training and race." Whose version is right? Part 3 of A Painful Truth examines North America's singular stance on medication. Download part three by clicking here.

Yearling CEmpire Maker--Sluice$1,100,000
Breeder: Guy & Diane Snowden (KY)
    Buyer: Stonestreet & George Bolton
Consignor: Denali Stud (Craig & Holly Bandoroff), agent
It was a half-dozen summers ago when a filly by Empire Maker out of MSP Sluice (Seeking the Gold) attracted a final bid of $1.6 million to top the Saratoga sale. There was a bit of deja vu all over again and while Monday night's offering from Denali Stud on behalf of Guy and Dede Snowden didn't quite scale those heights, he proved a hot commodity himself, selling for $1.1 million to the formidable team of Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton. The 2006 sales-topper came to be known as Mushka and was raced with great success by Zayat Stables before they parted company with her for $2.4 million at Keeneland November in 2008. She remained in training for Brushwood Stables and Bill Mott and reached a high-water mark with a victory in the 2009 GI Spinster S. Sluice's other foal to grace this pavilion, a colt named Quemstone (Smart Strike), was a $750,000 purchase by John Ferguson in 2010.
