Into Mischief Colt Stays Perfect at the Spa

Aveenu Malcainu | Sarah Andrew

Aveenu Malcainu, an impressive come-from-behind winner going 5 1/2 furlongs on debut at the Spa July 28, stayed perfect with a sharp score in his stakes debut here. Off as a close second choice, he sat a perfect trip chasing in third through opening fractions of :22.36 and :45.72. He began to roll with a three-wide move off the far turn and came charging down the lane to win for fun.

“The last hour and half has been exciting with him,” winning trainer Jeremiah Englehart revealed. “My assistant called me before the race and said he hit his head, scratched his nose and was bleeding out of his eye. We looked at him and thought he was OK. I don't know, just one of those days, I guess. I was thinking the worst-case scenario is we scratch and try him in the Hopeful, but he seemed like was all right. He's a big boy. We'll try and stretch him out a little more next time. Hopefully, he keeps progressing. I thought the extra eighth would help him this time. It's a process to get him going there. [The owners] said they want to run him in the [GI] Champagne [S. Oct. 7 at Belmont Park].”

The winner's stakes-winning dam had a filly by Munnings earlier this year and was bred back to Texas Red.
