R SUNDAY SURPRISE (Lucky Pulpit), a full-sister to 2014 Horse of the Year and all-time North American Thoroughbred earnings leader California Chrome, makes her debut in this Cal-bred maiden heat for trainer Doug O'Neill. Carrying the colors of Silver State Racing, Godwin and Melton et al, the chestnut has been drilling on a steady weekly interval over the local strip dating back to early May, culminating with a pair of three-furlong gate works June 6 and June 13. Bred by Perry Martin and Steve Coburn–who famously campaigned California Chrome to wins in the GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S.–R Sunday Surprise has been installed as the slight 5-2 morning line favorite as one of four first-timers signed on for this event.
