GLOBAL CAMPAIGN (Curlin) was crushed at the tills into 11-10 favoritism for his seven-furlong unveiling Jan. 5 and ran to the money, striking from close range en route to a smart 5 3/4-length victory. A $250K KEESEP yearling, the half-brother to MGISW Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) should appreciate the stretch out to two turns. A maiden winner at first asking, Klaravich Stables’ Standard Deviation (Curlin) was a sneaky good third to Knicks Go (Paynter) in the GI Breeders’ Futurity. A bit of a wiseguy selection for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at 43-5, he never lifted a hoof and trailed in. The blinkers come off the $450K KEESEP acquisition for this 3-year-old bow. TJCIS PPs

Robert and Lawana Low homebred ZAPPER VAN WINKLE (Ghostzapper) is the first foal from the unraced San Miguel Belle (Curlin), a daughter of the Lows’ outstanding Grade I-winning sprinter Capote Belle (Capote) and closely related to the latter’s SW & GSP Zapper Belle (Ghostzapper), dam of SW Kabella (Kitten’s Joy). Capote Belle’s daughter Gata Bella (Storm Cat) is the dam of MGSW & GI Breeders’ Cup Mile runner-up Catapult (Kitten’s Joy) and SW Ha Ha Tonka (Distorted Humor). Box of Chocolates (Candy Ride {Arg}) cost just $17K as a KEESEP yearling, but the full-brother to GISW Leofric is the 5-2 morning-line favorite off a series of strong works for Steve Asmussen. TRICK OF THE TAIL (Tale of the Cat) is kin to three winners from as many to race, including Randonnee (Blame), a stakes winner and twice placed at Group 3 level on the demanding Japan Racing Association circuit; and to US stakes winner Do The Dance (Discreet Cat) from this same sire line. Second dam Loving Pride (Quiet American) was winner in France of the G3 Prix d’Aumale for Sheikh Mohammed and Criquette Head. Sam-Son homebred Finest Jewel (Sky Mesa) is out of a half-sister to Canadian Horse of the Year Quiet Resolve (Affirmed), and Samuel family champions Eye of the Sphynx (Smart Strike) and her Sovereign Award- and Queen’s Plate-winning son Eye of the Leopard (A.P. Indy) appear under the third dam. TJCIS PPs

Hootenanny Half Highlight Among GP Maidens
9th-GP, $50K, Msw, 3yo, f, 1mT, post time: 4:09 p.m. ET
Summer Wind Equine product SHADOW PLAY (Galileo {Ire}) resurfaces here after being scratched from Jan. 27 maiden that was rained off the grass. The rare US-bred by this prolific stallion, the dark bay is a half-sister to Hootenanny (Quality Road), winner of the 2014 GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and runner-up in that year’s G1 Darley Prix Morny for trainer Wesley Ward. Her dam More Hennessy (Hennessy), who sold for $1.5m carrying this foal in utero at FTKNOV in 2015, is a half-sister to GISW Cat Moves (Tale of the Cat), while Grade I-winning third dam Dance Teacher (Smarten) was responsible for MSW Intentional Fever (Stormin Fever). The split of race nine has attracted Peter Brant’s first-starter CAFE AMERICANO (Medaglia d’Oro). Making her debut three days shy of her third birthday, the $625K KEESEP yearling is a daughter of two-time Canadian champion and dual GSW Roxy Gap (Indian Charlie), who fetched $850K from Blue Heaven Farm as a maiden mare at FTKNOV in 2013. The 3-1 morning-line favorite will need to work out a trip from the inside gate beneath Eclipse Award winner Irad Ortiz, Jr. TJCIS PPs

ITSALLABOUTTHEHYPE (Super Saver) is the second produce for Curlin Hawk (Curlin), a half-sister to champion and multiple Classic winner Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet) and SW & MGSP Unforgettable Max (Northern Afleet), whose son Seabhac (Scat Daddy) landed the grassy GIII Pilgrim S. at two. Zee Drop (Lemon Drop Kid) is a daughter of GSP Ash Zee (Exchange Rate) and is out of a half-sister to GISW Wickedly Perfect (Congrats), dam of Japanese Group 2 winner Hartley (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
