Indy Wind Mare 'Stars' in E.P. Taylor

Starship Jubilee | Michael Burns

No locally trained turf distaffer had managed to claim the GI E. P. Taylor S. since the Roger Attfield-conditioned Miss Keller (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) back in 2011, but Starship Jubilee snapped that streak Saturday with a stalk-and-pounce success in the 10-furlong feature, beating the European invaders at their own game.

Well backed off her pillar-to-post romp in the GII Canadian S. over nine panels of yielding turf Sept. 14, Starship Jubilee jumped away neatly from gate eight, but was beaten to the front by last-out G1 Prix Jean Romanet third Red Tea (GB) (Sakhee), who enjoyed a soft time of it from the front. Allowed to amble along through a half in a pedestrian :52.07 and three-quarters in 1:17.34, Red Tea took them into the second turn, but Starship Jubilee was poised to strike just off her flank. The Florida-bred claimed that one with a minimum of fuss in upper stretch, then threw in a final quarter-mile in :22.50 to seal the deal, as Durance–third as the favorite in this year's G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks)–and fellow sophomore filly Platane, winner of the G3 Prix Vanteaux at odds-on earlier this season, gave vain chase.

“Last time, she relaxed really nice going 1 1/8 miles and today, [trainer] Kevin [Attard] told me if they want to give you the lead, take the lead, but she didn't need the lead to win this race,” offered Contreras. “This filly came out really well trained and she was amazing today. She always gives me something no matter what at the end and I just was so comfortable on the last turn. When I saw no one was coming close to us on the front end, I was just waiting for the stretch to make a run and she just exploded.”

Fourth after setting the majority of the pace in the 2018 E.P. Taylor, Starship Jubilee–twice claimed for $16,000 earlier in her career–was fourth as the 7-10 favorite in the Claiming Crown Tiara before rolling home to win the Sunshine Millions Filly & Mare Turf at Gulfstream Jan. 19. Resuming from a four-month break to finish second to Secret Message (Hat Trick {Jpn}) in Woodbine's GII Nassau S. May 26, she was runner-up to Holy Helena (Ghostzapper) in the June 29 GII Dance Smartly S. and third to Significant Form (Creative Cause) in the GII Ballston Spa S. Aug. 24 at Saratoga ahead of her Canadian S. triumph.

Pedigree Notes:

The most accomplished of her dam's seven winners from eight to race and one of three black-type perfomers, Starship Jubilee is a maternal granddaughter of the outstanding New York-based turf mare Perfect Arc, who recorded her career high when validating 7-10 favoritism for trainer Angel Penna Jr. in the 1995 GI Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland. Perfectly Wild is the dam of the once-raced 2-year-old colt Allegedly Perfect (Kantharos) and was most recently covered by Malibu Moon.
