ParisLongchamp's return on Sunday was marked by successful British targeting, with Manton Estate Racing's Chilean (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) upstaging some domestic Classic pretenders in this G3 Prix la Force, an early trial for the G1 Prix du Jockey Club. Stepping up off a fourth behind the useful Vintager (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and subsequent Godolphin winners Symbolization (Ire) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and Old Persian (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in a seven-furlong maiden at Newmarket and a mile maiden win at Chelmsford in August, the bay captured a soft-ground Listed Ascendant S. in convincing style at Haydock in September. Considered by connections to be under his a-game when sixth in a strong edition of the G1 Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster the following month, he reappeared to provide trainer Martyn Meade with a significant first winner from his first runner from the esteemed establishment of Manton.
Sent off at a generous 5-1 with the main domestic hopes placed on The Niarchos Family's exciting Study of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), Chilean raced freely in a close-up second throughout the early stages before being committed by Oisin Murphy at the top of the straight. Asserting inside the last 100 metres as the 8-5 favourite made inroads from behind, the visitor hit the line with 1 1/4 lengths to spare, with Study of Man 3/4 of a length ahead of the fellow strong finisher Stable Genius (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}). “That was a good training performance and he's obviously a pretty classy horse,” his rider commented. “That ground rides pretty slow and he got a little bit lonely.” Freddie Meade, son of the trainer, added, “We were thinking that he was a mile-and-a-quarter horse going into this. He's coped with the ground again–we were surprised with the way he won at Haydock in testing conditions–but I think he'll go on better ground. He was a bit disappointing in the Racing Post Trophy, but he'd had a long season.”
Chilean is the first foal out of the Listed Prix Rose de Mai winner and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris third Childa, and is therefore a grandson of the Listed Prix Finlande scorer Chill who is herself a half-sister to the G3 Prix du Lys winner Remus de la Tour (Fr) (Stormy River {Fr}). This is also the family of the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon scorer Glory Forever (Forever Casting) and the G2 King's Stand S. and G2 Temple S. heroine Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) and the G3 Coventry S.-winning sire Verglas (Ire). Childa's 2-year-old filly by Dawn Approach (Ire) is named Princesse Li (GB), while she also has a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).
