'Ice' Poised for Whitney Showdown

“Donegal Racing and Calumet Farm's Keen Ice (Curlin) registered his final major work Saturday morning ahead of an upcoming start in next weekend's GI Whitney S. Victorious in the July 8 GII Suburban at Belmont last out, the handsome bay negotiated a half mile over Saratoga's main track in :49.09. Working in tandem with stablemate and GI Belmont S. third Patch (Union Rags), the five-year-old posted the 35th fastest move of 122 at the distance.

“I thought he breezed really, really well,” said Todd Pletcher. “It seems like he's in superb form at the moment.”

Keen Ice's biggest career victory was registered in 2015 when he defeated newly minted Triple Crown hero American Pharoah (Pioneerofthenile) in the GI Travers S.

Also included among the Whitney hopefuls: Grade I Stephen Foster winner Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}); Grade I-placed Breaking Lucky (Lookin At Lucky) and Grade II Brooklyn winner War Story (Northern Afleet).
