House Panel Vote Could Lead to Reopening of Horse Slaughter Plants

The U.S. House Appropriations Committee voted Wednesday in favor of a bill that would effectively lift the ban on horse slaughter. Horse slaughter in the States has been blocked for more than a decade by a lack of funding for USDA inspectors at slaughtering plants. The Fiscal Year 2018 Agriculture Appropriations Bill passed by a narrow 27-25 margin on Wednesday did not contain language regarding funding for inspectors. The effective ban on horse slaughter remains in place until Sept. 30 and was included in an overarching budget bill signed into law by President Trump in May.
