Greenham Day Transferred to Chelmsford

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) has taken emergency action to stage Saturday's G3 Greenham S. and G3 Fred Darling S. on the all-weather surface at Chelmsford following the abandonment of Newbury's two-day meeting.

Heavy rain at the Berkshire track meant that the already-heavy ground had become waterlogged, forcing Newbury to cancel Friday's card after a 7am inspection, while hopes of holding the two key Classic trials and the G3 John Porter S. today were dashed by lunchtime. All seven races have been transferred to Chelmsford City, which will hold its highest-profile raceday since the Essex track formerly known as Great Leighs reopened in January 2015.

Paul Johnson, Head of Racing for the BHA, commented: “The rapid deterioration in the weather at Newbury meant that this fixture had to be rescheduled at extremely late notice. This created significant challenges but we felt that it was important that the Newbury card, which contains some critical Guineas trials, should be rearranged on behalf of the connections of the horses and the betting public.”

He added, “Our thanks go to Newbury for making an early decision on their fixture, Chelmsford City for stepping in to stage the card, Weatherbys, and the Horserace Betting Levy Board for their financial assistance at short notice.”
