Got Stormy Reigns in Fourstardave

The Gary Barber and Southern Equine Stable-owned Got Stormy accounted for four of seven starts in 2018, including Woodbine's GIII Ontario Colleen S. last July. Off the board in her final two stakes starts of the season, kicked off 2019 season with a victory in a Gulfstream allowance in March before a good third behind Rushing Fall (More Than Ready) in the GI Jenny Wiley S. at Keeneland Apr. 13. Caught late and having to play the bridesmaid to subsequent GII Yellow Ribbon H. winner Beau Recall (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) in the May 4 GII Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill, the chestnut closed from just off the pace to take her latest, Saratoga's De La Rose S. Aug. 3. Spun back off only a week's rest, the filly settled off the pace as longshot Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) opened a clear lead through rapid splits of :22.66 and :44.61. As the pacesetter began to falter, Got Stormy was finding her best stride, gliding to the lead and pulling away to a three-length victory. She completed the mile in 1:32 flat to become the first female winner of the Fourstardave. Raging Bull (Dark Angel {Ire}) was second and favored Uni (GB) (More Than Ready) was third. With the course-record victory, Got Stormy became the first female to win the Breeders' Cup Win and You're In Fourstardave.

“Our filly broke well,” said winning trainer Mark Casse. “One of the things that's made her better as she's gotten older is her ability to relax and position her. That's what Ricardo [Santana, Jr.] did. I feel bad for Tyler [Gaffalione]. It's Tyler's filly, but he had committed earlier to March to the Arch [No. 1]. I didn't even give him a choice. I said he had to ride March to the Arch as part of the deal, and he was very gracious. Ricardo subbed in very well for Tyler, and Tyler told him all about her, so that was great.”

“It's all about Gary Barber,” said Casse, explaining bringing the filly back on one-week's rest. “I told him why we shouldn't run her. He said, 'That's good, but are you happy with how she is training?' I said 'Honestly, I've never seen her train so good' and he said 'We're running.' I wish I could say I was the smart one, but it was Gary Barber. He's not afraid to step out of the box.”

“I was fortunate to train another filly years ago in Tepin, who won the [GI] Breeders' Cup [Mile] and then was second,” added Casse. “I told Gary [Barber] early in the year that she was our next Tepin. It's nice sometimes when you're right. She's amazing.”
