Gosden “Very Pleased” With Hobbs

Jack Hobbs gallops at Newmarket Tuesday | Racing Post

Trainer John Gosden said he was “very pleased” with the racecourse gallop put in by last year's G1 Irish Derby winner Jack Hobbs (GB) (Halling) at Newmarket Tuesday. The 4-year-old worked seven furlongs under William Buick in the company of stablemate Dick Doughtywylie (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), with Jack Hobbs pulling about six lengths clear at the end.

“They went a good, strong pace and I thought he did enough,” said Gosden. “I only wanted him to go seven furlongs, as the ground was quite soft.”

Jack Hobbs is expected to resume in the G2 Jockey Club S. at Newmarket Apr. 30.

“I'm very pleased with him, but once he gets past his lead horse he thinks, 'that's it,' but he traveled well on the bridle and picked up well–he just idled a little bit,” Gosden explained, adding that the Godolphin colourbearer has progressed physically since last term. “He has put on 40 kilos since his last run,” the conditioner noted. “He's a lot stronger through his neck but he's never going to be a heavy horse, as his father [Halling] wasn't. He's done very well at home and has pleased all of us.”
