Gio Ponti Colt Graduates at Belmont

Pirellone | A Coglianese

3rd-BEL, $75,000, Msw, 10-8, 2yo, 1m, 1:35.72, ft.
PIRELLONE (c, 2, Gio Ponti–Eyepopnruby, by Take Me Out), a $150,000 FTSAUG yearling, was collared late and beaten just a neck in his seven-furlong debut at Saratoga Sept. 5. The 1-5 favorite sprinted out to the early lead and had a clear advantage through fractions of :22.64, :45.32 and 1:09.58. He carried a four-length advantage into the stretch, but began to tire in deep stretch as Patrick's Day (Harlan's Holiday), last in the early going, was closing powerfully to just miss catching the pacesetter. Owned by Paul Saylor's PHS Racing, Pirellone is the fourth winner for his freshman sire (by Tale of the Cat). He is a half-brother to Midnight Serenade (Bandini, SW, $115,128). Eyepopnruby produced a colt by First Dude this year and was bred back to Flat Out. Lifetime Record: 2-1-1-0, $61,600. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO, sponsored by Fasig-Tipton.
