The New Zealand star Gingernuts (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) has come through surgery on a fractured pastern and connections are hopeful the triple Group 1 winner will make a full recovery. Gingernuts was favourite for the G1 Emirates S. at Flemington on Saturday, but injured his left foreleg on the way to the start and was subsequently withdrawn from the race. His injury was even more serious than originally feared, but Te Akau's David Ellis had an upbeat report.

“The leg was scanned on Monday and Gingernuts had the surgery within hours,” explained David Ellis of owners Te Akau Racing to the NZ Racing Desk. “The fracture was worse than we had hoped for and he was operated on at the Werribee Vet Clinic. The operation went very well with four screws put into the pastern.”

A winner of the 2017 G1 New Zealand Derby, Gingernuts shot to prominence for trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards when adding the G1 Rosehill Guineas in March. The chestnut gelding added to his top-level tally when claiming the G1 Windsor Park Plate at Hastings in September before being touched off in the rescheduled G1 Livamol Classic at the same track in October.

Recuperation is now on the agenda for the gelding as Ellis added, “Gingernuts will spend the next week at the clinic and the following month at a nearby property. After that, he'll come home to Te Akau for a good, long spell. He's got a beautiful temperament. He's a lovely, kind horse and he'll be a very good patient.”
