Giant Oak Colt Upsets the Skidmore

Chattel | Justina Severni

Chattel charged through late to spring a double-digit upset in the Friday afternoon feature at Saratoga, the Skidmore S. Breaking sharply, the 22-1 shot saved ground in a close sixth at the back of the first flight of horses as Gins and Tins (Scat Daddy) battled 'TDN Rising Star' and GIII Bashford Manor S. winner Sir Truebadour (More Than Ready), who was making his turf debut here, through a sharp first quarter in :21.84. Moving into third through a half in :45.26, Chattel split the pacesetting duo in the final sixteenth and punched clear to earn his black-type badge. Well-bet Swamp Rat (Hat Trick {Jpn}) came flying late to complete the exacta and Good Good (Quality Road) also closed well for third. Expected favorite Shang Shang Shang (Shanghai Bobby), winner of Royal Ascot's G2 Norfolk S. last time June 21, was scratched due to turf conditions.

“This is my first Saratoga win and my first Saratoga trip,” said trainer Brandon McFarlane. “It's crazy. Just to get here is amazing, but to win, it's nuts. I was expecting him to win, but not like that, it was a nice effort. He's a Kentucky-bred, so maybe we'll go to Kentucky Downs [next].”

The conditioner added, “He [jockey Kendrick Carmouche] had a ton of horse. I thought he was actually going to be closer, he got a little bit further back than I thought, because he's real quick out of the gate. I knew he could pass, because I schooled him last week behind two horses, taking dirt, and then he tipped out and just went by easy.”

Third on debut sprinting over the Belmont main track, Chattel missed by just a nose behind Yes and Yes (Sidney's Candy) next out when switched to the lawn downstate May 25. Third when getting back on dirt at Delaware June 21, the $2,000 FTKOCT buy earned his diploma in a Laurel turf sprint last time July 13. Chattel is the first foal out of Sh Sh Shakin', who has since produced a yearling filly by Bullet Train (GB) and was most recently bred to Midshipman. The winner hails from the family of European Highweight Mujahid (Danzig).
