Gatsby A Breeders' Cup Possible

The Grey Gatsby | Racing Post

Classic winner The Grey Gatsby (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) could cross the Atlantic to contest next month's GI Breeders' Cup Turf, according to Adam Ryan, assistant trainer to his father, Kevin Ryan. Last year's G1 Prix du Jockey Club and G1 Irish Champion S. victor had suffered a handful of narrow defeats at the highest level earlier this season, but was disappointing last out when sixth in the Irish Champion Sept. 12. Ryan blamed the soft going for the grey's defeat that day.

“It was just the ground again [in Ireland]–the only time he's had his ground all season was at Ascot,” Ryan said. “Looking at it, you'd say he's crying out for a mile and four [furlongs] now. There's the Breeders' Cup Turf to think about, but it's up to dad and [owner] Frank Gillespie. He's had a long, hard season so we've got to do what's right by the horse.”
